AUSTIN, Texas - Lt. Governor Dan Patrick announced his appointment of Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, to the Texas Access to Justice Commission. Senator Zaffirini will assist the Commission in its efforts to expand civil legal aid resources to low-income Texans.
A public service member for more than three decades, Senator Zaffirini is highly regarded for her commitment to improving economic and environmental matters, championing against cronyism and corruption in the legal system, promoting access to justice, and advocating for improved health services, especially for juveniles, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
Senator Zaffirini is the first Hispanic woman elected to the Texas Senate and the second highest-ranking female, Hispanic senator. She’s renowned for her bipartisan effectiveness. During the 85th Legislative Session, Senator Zaffirini passed 108 bills, more bills than any other legislator for the second consecutive legislative session. She’s received more than 900 awards and honors for her public service and her professional and legislative work.

The Texas Access to Justice Commission was created in 2001 by the Supreme Court of Texas to develop and implement policy initiatives designed to expand access to and enhance the quality of justice in civil and legal matters for low-income Texans.
